Rules

The following are the official rules for The Masters Challenge Invitational. Please review these rules fully and carefully. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Dan Baker at The Challenge headquarters. In addition, check The Challenge web site for information and updates.

Competitors May Participate by Invitation Only: All competitors must be formally invited by the event administrators. A list of builders initially invited to compete is included in this package. We welcome suggestions for additional, qualified builders to be invited.

One Entry Per Competitor: Only one model may be entered in The Masters Challenge Invitational by each competitor.

Scale: Each entry must be built in1/24 or 1/25 scale only.

In-Person Entry Requirements: All entries must be entered in person, either:

  • By the competitor; or
  • By a proxy designated by the competitor. The proxy will be responsible for the entry and the required presentations.

No mail-in entries will be accepted.

One Class/Awards: All entries will compete against each other in a single class.

Awards will be presented for Fifth through Best of Challenge.

Additionally, the following Master Awards will be presented:

  • Best Finish
  • Best Use of Technology
  • Best Working Features

Eligibility: No model entered in The Challenge can have competed in any formally-judged contest or competition prior to The Masters Invitational Challenge. However, a model entered in the Challenge may have been publically displayed in complete or incomplete form, as long as it was never previously entered in any formally-judged competition. The competitor may enter a long-term project that was started before the announcement of The Masters Challenge Invitational.

Judging: Judging will be performed by the entrants only. An entrant will not judge his or her own entry. A person acting in the capacity of a proxy may not judge on behalf of the competitor that he or she is representing.

An official judging sheet will be issued to each judge for each entry. The judging sheet is divided into categories, with a synopsis of items to evaluate in each category. Entrant –judges will award points, within the range indicated in each category, to each entry. The points totals from all judging sheets will determine the winners.

All scores and information on the judging sheets will be kept in strictest confidence by the event administrators, and will not be released or revealed to anyone including competitors, entrants and proxies.

Entries will not be penalized for any damage or breakage that occurred during transportation to The Challenge.

Handling of Entries: Only the entrant, or the competitor’s proxy, may move his or her entry at any time, including during judging and event photography.

Subject Matter: Subject to the following “Definition of Vehicle” provisions, each competitor may build any vehicle, real or imagined, in any style, from any era.

Definition of Vehicle: For the purposes of The Masters Challenge Invitational, the following definitions will apply:

  • The entry must be a complete, self-powered vehicle or, in the case of a combination of scale vehicles such as a tractor-trailer rig, must contain a self-powered vehicle as part of the combination; and
  • The entry may be any land-use vehicle designed for personal, competition, commercial, or non-military government use.
  • The following will not be accepted as an entry in The Challenge: • Unfinished or incomplete vehicles;
  • Components of a vehicle (e.g., engines, etc.); • Models of a non-operational subjects such as a car “on blocks” or a vehicle missing operational components;
  • Scale boats, aircraft, trains or vehicles designed to operate solely on train tracks, even if powered by an automotive engine;
  • Military vehicles of any description;
  • Motorcycles or “trikes;” and
  • Dioramas of any description. (See: “Display Bases” on page 7).

Basis of Construction: The entry may be based in whole or in part on any existing model kit of any vintage, or may be completely scratch-built, at the discretion of the competitor.

Materials: There are no restrictions whatsoever on construction materials or technology used. Any materials and any audio, video, or other system(s) or equipment may be used in the entry and in the required presentations.

Single-Builder Requirement: The Masters Challenge Invitational rewards individual craftsmanship and creativity.

The Challenge does not permit partnership, committee or “contract” construction of entries in part or in whole. To be eligible for competition, each entry must be constructed exclusively by the competitor.

No one other than the competitor may:

  • Perform modifications to, or construction of, the body, chassis or drive train;
  • Apply any finish. Paint, or graphic design work; • Install any upholstery, materials or kits;
  • Assemble any component or element (such as a pre-wired distributor); or • Perform any assembly tasks.

However, the competitor may:

  • Use parts or components specially-manufactured for that entry, as long as such specifically-made parts and components are not assembled, detailed or installed on any part or element of the entry by anyone other than the competitor;
  • Use any materials or technologies without limitation;
  • Use any aftermarket/unassembled part(s) of any kind or description; and
  • Use any power sources, switches and electronics, chips, audio sources and speakers, video components, etc. Any parts or components may be outsourced, but their integration and installation in the model and/or base must be done solely by the competitor;

Documentation: All documentation of the entry, and the presentations of that documentation, will be evaluated as part of the judging process. Research and construction details, both during the live and on-table presentations, should be carefully and economically organized.

    The competitor must explain his or her choice of vehicle, and document the subject matter:

  • If the entry is a replica of a specific 1:1 vehicle, the documentation must substantiate the accuracy of the entry.
  • If the entry is of a prototypical 1:1 vehicle, the documentation must present enough information to support the accuracy and authenticity of the various components and finishes presented in the model.
  • If the entry is a design study, phantom, futuristic, or other “imaginary” vehicle, the documentation must demonstrate that the vehicle would be a practical 1:1 vehicle, that it would meet all ergonomic and mechanical criteria to be driveable, and that it would meet typical legal requirements (for the era depicted) if licensed for street use.
  • If the entry is of a modified factory vehicle (e.g., a custom, hot rod or commercial vehicle), the documentation must demonstrate the full operational, design, practical, and ergonomic features of the entry, and that the vehicle would meet typical legal requirements (for the era depicted) if licensed for street use.
  • If the entry is of a competition vehicle, the entry must meet the requirements of the sanctioning body, with documentation supporting that compliance.

Presentation of The Entry and Documentation: Presentation of the entry and documentation will take two forms:

Live Presentation: As part of the judging process, each entrant or proxy is required to make a short “live” verbal and visual presentation, approximately 20 minutes in length, to all the other entrant-judges. A proxy may not show a totally pre-recorded presentation made by the competitor, but must make a “live” presentation as if the competitor was present at The Challenge.

    The Live Presentation must include:

  • A general discussion and overview of the entry, including why that subject was selected;
  • A demonstration of the working and technological features of the entry, a description of the technical and/or special features of which the judges should be aware, and an explanation of how they were accomplished; and
  • A statement of the goal(s) the competitor set for himself or herself, particularly the challenges that were met, the skills and techniques that were learned, and the solutions to problems encountered.
  • The entrant or proxy may make this live presentation using any form(s) of visual aids he or she chooses. An easel, a slide projector, and a screen for a Power-Point demonstration will be available if the entrant or proxy wishes to use them as part of their live presentation.
  • Those entrants or proxies electing to make a Power Point presentation must: i) provide their own laptop computer and all hookup equipment, and ii) contact Challenge Administrator Dan Baker for technical hookup requirements no later than August 1, 2011.

    On-Table Presentation: Each competitor (whether in person or by proxy) is also required to present in-depth documentation on the table adjacent to the entry.

    Each entry and its accompanying documentation will be displayed far enough apart from other entries to permit each entrant or proxy the maximum opportunity to display his or her entry and materials. Documentation and information should be placed on the table in such a way as to make viewing of the materials easy, and to protect the entry from damage.

    On-table documentation may take any or all of the following forms:

  • Written text, sketches, illustrations, photographs, photocopies, printed documents such as brochures or manuals, magazine articles and similar materials.
    Printed information must be in a convenient format such as a three-ring binder or photo album. Competitors are advised to present information on their entry in an easy-to-understand format with “bullet point” lists;
  • Videos or slides;
  • Audio including interviews;
  • A laptop computer presentation. The entrant or proxy is advised to make certain that access to this information is easily available to the judges; and
  • Three-dimensional studies or developments, molds, and model(s) set on the table adjacent to the entry for comparison purposes only.

Competitors are advised to present photographs of all elements of the entry that might be concealed or partially obscured on the finished model to help judges and the audience quickly understand the steps taken to build the entry. These could include “during construction” photos, the chassis and drivetrain, interior details, internal components and assemblies, and other elements not readily visible.

Because scale realism and practicality, including ergonomics and functionality, are extremely important in this competition, care should be taken to fully document these aspects of each entry.

Competitors are also encouraged to consider creating a “hand-out” overview of their entry for the judges and audience to pick up and keep.

Display Bases: A display base may be included as part of the on-table display/documentation:

  • The base may be any size, shape or design and may contain the power source(s) and control(s) for the operational features in the entry. Those controls may operate any motorized, audio, video, electronic, electric or other operating and technological features.
  • Entrants and proxies should be aware that they may want to pick up the entry from the base during the “live” part of the judging to best present the entry to the judges.
    Only the entrant or proxy will be permitted to pick up the entry.
  • The base may contain or present an announcement of the identity of the model and other relevant information that would assist the judges and attendees in identifying and understanding the entry. However, the display presentation should not constitute a diorama. As a guide, please remember that the entry, not the display, is the story.
  • The base may not include any figure(s) or animal(s).
  • No base will be judged.
  •
